Error 1500: Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.
Spent most of the time searching on the Internet but couldn't find a working solution. Later, I combined two solutions and it worked.
Here is what I did.
(You should have admin privileges on the system)
Step 1: Open Windows Registry Editor by typing regedit.exe in Start>Run.
Step 2: Go to the location: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\InProgress
Step 3: You'll find that the value (Default) is filled with some data. Double click to open it. Empty the contents for that value.
Step 4: Open Windows Services by typing services.msc in Start>Run
Step 5: Find out the service named Windows Installer from the list of available services. The service would be started and Startup Type will be Manual. Right-click the service, select properties and change Startup Type to Disabled. Click Apply and then OK.
Step 6: Restart computer, after closing all the open windows.
Step 7: Once the system is up after restart, open Services, and change the Windows Installer Startup Type to Manual (You Disabled it in Step 5). Click Apply and then OK.
Done!
Now, you'll be able to install any software that failed Error 1500.
It works for me. thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt works for me also with error 1500 and error 1618
ReplyDeleteUPDATE:
ReplyDeleteAn alternate method.
Delete the Key: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Installer\InProgress
Open [Task Manager >> Processes]
Check "Show processes from all uses"
Find the process (might occur more than once), right click and select "End Process". Click Yes for Warning prompt.
Now open Windows Services by typing services.msc in Start>Run
Find out the service named Windows Installer from the list of available services. Right click and select start.
That's it. Try to install the failed software. You'll succeed.
I've felt this method a little rude, but I this is quick. I do it all the time whenever I'm in trouble.
Thanks,

Thank you this helped me.
DeleteThank You So Much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
DeleteThank you, have been stuck on this for ages, this worked, very grateful
DeleteThanks..!! it worked for me..
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI hope someone can help. I have the 1500 error when trying to install MS Office XP. I had a look in the registry where you suggested but can't find the 'installer' folder you mentioned...it is just not there!!!! Ahhhh
I was trying to install Virtual PC (XP mode) as a s/w I was trying to install failed on W7 so I thought about trying use XP mode..but that failed too..MICROSOFT..huh. I couldn't get past the 1st step of the installation where you had to run WindowsActivationUpdate.exe. Even though my w7 is legal and activated it just would not let me get past the 1st step and kept telling me to run the same program again and again. I gave up trying to install the Roxio s/w and thought I would install the Office XP as wanted to use it. But that does not work too..MICROSOFT... Now I don't know which s/w error is giving me the error 1500..Roxio or Windows Installer as can't seem to find either as the installations didn't complete for both
Please help
Thanks
Steve
UPDATE
ReplyDeleteFound the installer program in HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion. The default value was blank. As in the original post, went to services.msc, disabled Windows Installer, re-booted, changed Windows Installer back to manual and it worked fine. Many thanks
Steve
Wow, this actually worked for me too! I've been completely frustrated trying to find an answer for this issue, and now my Office 2003 re-install was a breeze. I have an older Sony Vaio with XP, and began searching when the Office automatic uploads all failed. I finally arrived here. Thanks again for your collective knowledge!
DeleteExactly - current version. Thanks!!
Deletethis worked up to the point it would not let me disable windows uninstaller
DeleteIt worked!!! Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks worked.. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I know this is probably a simple problem to fix but I had been searching for awhile and found no answers. I even asked some of my friends who say they 'know' computers, they didn't know either. So once again thank you. This was helpful and easy to follow.
ReplyDeleteEverything was fine...only the show process from all user does the trick.....ended 2 running process...it was good to go....thanks BTW the Inprogress key was not there in my case
ReplyDeleteThe above steps from other users (e.g. deleting the registry key, stopping/starting the Windows Installer Service) did not work for me. The short explanation is that I had something forcing an installation that was always failing or getting stuck. By uninstalling that software, I was able to fix my system.
ReplyDeleteThe long explanation:
In my situation, I had two msiexec.exe processes starting. If I killed these, they would be restarted within 5-10 seconds.
What I wound up doing was killing those two processes and then immediately installing the software I was trying to install. The good software install would finally start and not have the Error 1500 "Another Installation is in Progress" error. While the good installer was running, a dialog box would pop up that said:
"User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'OMCI'. That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product. Your current install will now continue."
After clicking OK, a second dialog box would pop up that said:
"Error 1704. An installation for OMCI is currently suspended. You must undo the changes made by that installation to continue. Do you want to undo those changes?"
I clicked Yes, and then it undid the changes to OMCI and finally installed my good software package!!
The final solution was to discover that *something* on my system was continually trying to force installation of OMCI (the Dell OpenManage Client Instrumentation). I went to the Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and uninstalled OMCI. At first, this gave me the error message about another installation being in progress. Once again I killed the two msiexec.exe programs and then immediately uninstalled OMCI. This time I successfully uninstalled OMCI!!!
Now my computer was finally fixed!
This is on Windows XP.
It works For Me Thanks,
ReplyDeleteThis is on windows server 2008
It works for me... once. It'll work once per download/update. After that time I have to repeat the steps for it to work again :/
ReplyDeletetoo bad a DOS batch file would not work instead.
ReplyDeleteWorked! great!
ReplyDeleteworked like a charm. thanks!
ReplyDeletesuper fix. Worked for me. Microsoft should include this in their documentation
ReplyDeleteOK, so I was installing steam, and I got that error message. I was about to do those methods, but first I decided to try and install it again. TADA, it worked. I swear, some computers have a mind of their own.
ReplyDeletewow...trusted information like this is priceless...This actually worked...big thanks
ReplyDeleteThis is Amazing, worked for meeeee toooo!!!
ReplyDeleteWho needs Microsoft fix it or community support?
Deletethank you very much! i tried a lot of things and only this one worked for me!!!
ReplyDeleteThaaaaaaanx !! It Works Maan !!
ReplyDeletecant change the starup type to disabled .... its jammed at manual... what should i do???
ReplyDeleteme too
DeleteFor Windows 7 64bit just open Task Manager>Show processes from all users> End every instance of msiexec.exe that is running. Restart the software installer.
ReplyDeleteOMG YOU ARE THE MAN....I TRY INSTALLER IN PROGRESS BUT COULDNT FIND IT BUT THIS WORKS
DeleteTHIS. Easiest possible way, thank you!
Deleteits very simple just open task manager, show all user process and find msiexec.exe, just end this application, your problem will be solved. No need to go in the registry or no need to restart the computer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the simple solution, Muhammad. It took about 30 seconds!
DeleteIt's always so maddening when MS provides a complicated procedure to solve a Windows bug while simple alternates exist.
I find two instances of msiexec.exe: "msiexec.exe" and "msiexec.exe *32". Should I kill both? I have Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Thanks!
DeleteThank you for this solution, I have tried everything posted everywhere, but only your solution worked, like in 30 seconds! I found the msiexec.exe on the task manager/ services part. I am using windows 8. There was nothing in users. Thank you.
DeleteAmazingly simple. The only solution that's worked for me after trying out other complex prescriptions. Thank you.
DeleteWorked great .. and in record time too! Sadly I'd already shelled out $30 for some useless download (Registry Reviver) which turned out to be a total waste of cash! Thank you very much.
DeleteGreat ! It worked.
DeleteThanks buddy
:)
What worked for me, disable Windows Installer in services, show all processes, kill msiexec, set Windows Installer in services to Automatic and then install. Bingo!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much
ReplyDeleteit worked for me :)
It did work, thank you! Looked for days on the web and only found software to download (I'm skeptical normally as they tell you what to do but that you need to purchase to get it done).
ReplyDeleteYour method worked for me and made complete sense.
Thanks
Thanks a lot, the registry tweak worked well!
ReplyDeleteThanks guys what I did was I noticed (services.msc) that all the service tasks in Windows Installer were greyed out when attempting to stop the service. In Ctrl Alt Del started task manager then I selected and expanded the Windows Installer process then right clicked Windows Installer sub category then stopped that process (Windows 8). Launched a downloaded copy of Adobe XI and voila it installed.
ReplyDeleteReally helped me. Thanks.
ReplyDeletemerci
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, you saved me from going crazy!
ReplyDeleteWhen I try to install any program in my system then I received windows error 1500. It was quite strange for me, I didn’t have any solutions to fix this windows error. But when I use this third party repair tool then I have easily removed this error and fix my PC problems permanently.

ReplyDeleteAlternative method was Quick. It worked for me.

ReplyDeleteFine really this blog is very effective to fix windows error 1500 with easily. Its steps are easy to understand and solve by manually with an effective way.
ReplyDeleteany one here?? plss help me to my problem
ReplyDeletegreat, thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteSo simple, yet effective
ReplyDeleteIt worked for me too!!! Thanks !!!
ReplyDeleteOnly the installer folder to be selected was different in step 2 in my case !!!
I am having Windows 7 home basic !!
SOLUTION for that could be multiple windows installer processes. It took me quiet lot time to get through each proposed solution for that issue, however this is the one that helped me:
ReplyDelete0. if you already ran your installer, leave it,
1. go to task manager and processes management
2. check if you have DOUBLED windows installed process.
3. close second windows installed process
- aftger that the installation should proceed correctly... TILL next creation of doubled process - that occurred for when installing Visual Studio on Windows 10.
If the Windows Installer process is once more created, kill it,
Repeat that till your installation will finish.
Superb! It worked for me -- oh, yes :-)
ReplyDeleteThank's a lot.
I have Windows 7 home premium.
Yeaaaaahhhhhh!!!! This worked! I can finally download stuff. Thank you a lot.
ReplyDeleteThank you dude.
